The Old Testament Builds Our Understanding of Jesus

God did not give “extra” Scripture. Paul says all Scripture is God-breathed and useful—meaning the Old Testament is not merely background information, but living instruction that shapes Christian faith. The stories and symbols of the Old Testament teach us what sin is, why atonement matters, and how desperately we need a righteous King and faithful Priest. Without that foundation, the gospel easily shrinks into vague encouragement. But Scripture trains us to see God’s holiness, our rebellion, and God’s covenant faithfulness to rescue. At the same time, Paul’s point isn’t academic. God breathes out His Word to form a people who live under His voice. The Old Testament rebukes our idols, corrects our self-justifications, and trains our instincts toward righteousness. As Christians, we read it with a clear confidence: its hopes and patterns reach their fulfillment in Jesus. So don’t treat the Old Testament like a closed museum. Receive it as your Father’s voice—leading you to Christ, exposing sin that needs forgiveness, and shaping a life that reflects the Savior you love.

Key Takeaway

The whole Bible matures us into Christlike faith.

Questions to Consider

  1. Which “use” of Scripture—teaching, rebuking, correcting, training—do you most resist, and why?
  2. How has the Old Testament clarified your understanding of Jesus and the gospel?
  3. What habit could help you receive Scripture as God’s voice (time, plan, journaling, community)?
